Laying the Foundation for Cloud Migration

Cloud migration is the process of transferring digital data, applications, and other business processes from their existing infrastructure to a cloud computing environment. This process can involve moving all or parts of an existing system to a single public cloud provider, or to multiple providers, as well as hybrid deployments that combine elements from both on-premises and cloud-based systems.

Migrating to the cloud is a powerful strategy for organizations looking to modernize their application environments and take advantage of the benefits that cloud computing offers. By moving applications and processes to the cloud, organizations can reduce capital and operational costs, increase scalability and flexibility, gain access to leading-edge services and technologies, and more quickly adopt best practices.

The complexity of your applications significantly drives the complexity of the migration. Vendors may claim that cloud migration is simple, but without an in-depth understanding of your current environment, it’s impossible to accurately assess the complexity of the transfer. Security requirements are also a critical factor when planning and implementing a move to the cloud.

Data

Before starting a cloud migration project, organizations should carefully consider their data storage needs and develop a plan for how to secure and store data in a way that meets their goals. This will ensure compatibility between existing applications and those being migrated to the cloud. Requirements can vary greatly depending on needs therefore assessing the data beforehand can ensure compliance with industry regulations, such as the Health Insurance Portability Act (HIPAA) or the General Data Protection Regulation Law (GDPR).

Security

When considering security requirements, it is important to take into account both internal and external factors. Internally, establish measures that ensure the privacy and integrity of confidential data, as well as access control policies, to ensure that only authorized personnel can access sensitive information.  It’s also important to consider data retention policies and data transfer protocols.

Cost

Moving applications and processes to the cloud can be a costly undertaking, as organizations must consider not only upfront expenses such as hardware and software but also ongoing maintenance and operational expenses. Additionally, the cost of time involved in migrating their applications and processes. While cloud vendors may advertise significant cost savings, that’s not always the case. Despite the many benefits of cloud migration, it may not always be the most cost-effective solution. There are upfront costs for hardware, software, ongoing maintenance, and operational expenses which can quickly add up.  You may also require additional resources, such as dedicated personnel.

With these considerations in mind, organizations can take advantage of all that cloud computing has to offer while ensuring secure data storage and compliance with industry regulations. Just be sure to do your homework upfront and make sure you understand the objectives you’re working to accomplish before jumping in.
